Next Gen Summit 2019 – HR Trends for Aspiring Entrepreneurs
Last Updated on March 29, 2023 by VantagePoint
Being an entrepreneur in today’s world is an act of courage, determination and strong leadership. Supporting those who choose to overcome the obstacles of building a new business from scratch is an inspirational journey, especially if we are talking about the financial part of a business, like payroll solutions, benefits administration or HR trends.
When starting a new business, it takes a combination of mindset, skill, hard work, and a bit of luck to overcome challenges and find the right tools you need to succeed.
Being in the play benefit arena and working with employers and employees for almost 30 years now, Vantage Point has set to give out from their experience to those at the beginning of their entrepreneurial journey through the voice of their CEO, Mark DeRosa.
About the Summit
Mark participated as a volunteer at this years’ Next Gen Summit that took place on June 7-9 in New York City. NextGen is a premier business hub providing the knowledge, mentorship, and resources for young entrepreneurs to build sustainable and successful businesses.
Over 1000 people gathered from around the world in order to take part at the largest Next Gen Summit yet, over 150 mentors gave their advice to new entrepreneurs and over 2400 one-on-one meetings took place over the 3 days of the Summit.
The organizers set out to make NGS2019 the most impactful event to date, with the help of their partners who enabled them to deliver the resources, mentorship, and education to empower hundreds of entrepreneurial journeys.
HR Trends & Mentorship
Mark DeRosa provided time to mentor aspiring entrepreneurs and existing startup companies and met with a lot of people who were interested in finding out more about HR best practices, payroll, and benefits administration:
- One startup business owner that wanted advice on pricing and market delivery on an HR training platform;
- One startup with 2 partners that wanted assistance with competitive market research around an applicant tracking system they develop;
- One investor who had multiple startups in the cannabis space and was looking for assistance on a myriad of HR-related issues;
- One graduate student looking for insight into best hiring practices;
- One startup that needed some help on business formation and tax-effective benefit programs.
Mark spoke from his 30 years of experience in the field and provided glimpses into a long-term strategic approach for managing the increasing cost and complexity of employer compliance. He tried to offer insights on handling HR trends, solutions, payroll, and benefits administration for start-ups, offering the leaders the tools they will need to better manage the HR segment of their business.
At the same time, Mark explained that in order to focus on strategy, culture, and other new business initiatives, you first need to have a set of HR best practices, integrating the right technology in order to better manage this complex side of your business, before it overwhelms you.
As an adviser, as someone who helps companies figure out these complex policies, who helps figure out how to engage and manage employees in different ways, Mark considers that employers have today much more issues to handle as before, many more things to worry about with the increase in government regulations and compliance requirements.
Payroll and Benefits Insights
Next Gen-ers connected with fellow leaders, pitched top investors and met the masterminds behind some of the world-renowned brands. They received precious information, advice, and insight from experienced business owners and managers in order to turn their passions into realistic working businesses.
The Next Gen Summit had a lot of explanatory sessions about building a powerful brand, surviving the bureaucracy, smart financial planning and a lot of other topics that directly impact the evolution of a new business.
The event fostered lifelong connections between mentors and emerging entrepreneurs, discussed various business topics, from social entrepreneurship, the inspirational journey of female founders, and other trending subjects, during the one-to-one meetings, roundtables, panel discussions, and long dinners that took place throughout the 3 days of the Summit.
Mark had the chance to offer his insight on the simplification of payroll, benefits and HR solutions with the use of tax avoidance programs allowed under the IRS rules, he tried to guide entrepreneurs through the ever-changing labyrinth of federal, state and city regulations throughout the time spent there. He also talked about the main employee benefits trends for 2019, about savings and spending accounts, but also about the evolution of fringe benefits.
